The Helly Hansen Ægir Race 2.0 oilskin is designed for offshore racing and the toughest weather conditions. The jacket and bib offer maximum protection with well thought-out details: a hood with a transparent visor that can be moulded with wire, a stowable storm flap in the collar and double cuffs.

The extremely thick padded knees are particularly spectacular: with around 4 millimetres of padding, they offer real protection when working in front of the boat. The heat pockets in the trousers and jacket are lined with fluffy fleece and keep your stomach and hands warm even in icy conditions. The price is 800 euros for the jacket and 800 euros for the bib.

Maximum protection with visor hood

The hood of the Ægir Race 2.0 is a highlight. The transparent peak allows all-round visibility, even if the hood does not turn perfectly. The integrated wire can be moulded so that the peak fits exactly. The stowable storm flap can be completely folded down so that you can really look out as if through a visor. Full protection for face and neck. The hood turns well due to the solid collar construction, and even if it doesn't, the transparent material ensures sufficient visibility to the side.

The bib can be precisely adjusted at the shoulders, waist and ankle cuffs. The leg opening can be made wide for boots or closed close to the leg. The adjustment on the jacket hem is at the top - you can pull up the webbing so that it doesn't stick out at the bottom. Cleverly designed to prevent snagging.

Heat pockets like a heater

The heat pockets are exceptional: in the bib they are so fluffily lined with fleece that they insulate the entire chest area at the same time. With the trousers alone, the stomach is already warm. The jacket also has lined heat pockets with zip fasteners. There are also waterproof side pockets on the jacket and pockets with Velcro and zip fasteners on the thighs. These are completely waterproof for smartphones or other sensitive items.

A special detail: an eyelet on the jacket, intended for the emergency stop clip on motorboats and RIB trips.

Knee pads for foreship work

The knees are not only reinforced, but also have extremely thick padding - around 3 to 4 millimetres. You can drop onto hard ground without feeling a thing. This padding is very comfortable, especially when working forward. The knees are also well moulded so that freedom of movement is not restricted.

Many reflectors increase visibility at night and in poor lighting conditions. The workmanship is excellent and the material is robust. The Ægir Race 2.0 is an oilskin that makes no compromises.

Not for everyone

The catch: this oilskin is designed for special applications. In summer on the Baltic Sea, it is completely overkill. It is so warm and protective that you sweat quickly. It can be used for offshore passages, bad weather, cold conditions or night sailing. If you mainly do coastal sailing or only go on weekend trips, you don't need this level of protection.

But for those who regularly sail in tough conditions - long distance, ocean racing, winter crossings - the Ægir Race 2.0 is a worthwhile investment. It is comfortable, warm and offers maximum protection.

Dort hat er im Bereich Test & Technik seine Berufung gefunden: Segelboote und Sicherheitsequipment testen.
