Ortlieb Duffle
Ortlieb's Duffle is a waterproof travel bag that can be converted into a rucksack. The German quality brand from Heilbronn relies on a revised Tizip zip and reinforced Cordura base. The duffle fulfils protection class IP 67 and should therefore be watertight even if accidentally submerged under water. The bag is now being distributed by the company Frisch in Munich.

Ortlieb has been synonymous with robust, waterproof panniers and rucksacks for decades. With the Duffle, Ortlieb is expanding its range with a versatile travel bag that should also prove its worth on yachts. The distribution by Frisch in Munich brings the brand closer to the maritime target group - Frisch is known for high-quality sailing equipment and already distributes other premium brands such as Musto, Spinlock and Zhik. The combination of German manufacturing quality and decades of experience with waterproof materials makes Ortlieb an interesting alternative to classic sailing bags.

Tizip zip for quick access

The duffle has a long, waterproof Tizip zip that allows access to the entire contents of the bag. Unlike roll-top closures, which open from the top, the zip allows quick access to individual items of equipment even when the bag is full. The revised version of the zip is said to be more reliable and durable than previous models. Tizip zips are known from dry diving and remain tight even under pressure.

The IP 67 protection class means that the case is dustproof and protected against temporary submersion. Specifically, it should remain watertight for 30 minutes at a depth of one metre. This means it can be used on yachts: Even if the bag goes overboard or is completely washed over by spray in heavy weather, the contents remain dry. However, the tightness only works when the zip is closed - it must be fully tightened.

Backpack or travelling bag

The padded shoulder straps can be used as carrying handles or shouldered to carry the duffle as a rucksack. This is particularly practical when transporting over longer distances - for example from the car park to the boat or when going ashore. The padding is designed to ensure carrying comfort even with heavy contents.

An internal compression strap makes it possible to reduce the pack size when the bag is not completely full. This prevents the contents from shifting and makes the bag more compact during transport. The compression strap is available on all sizes except the smallest 40-litre version. In this case, the bag is compact enough anyway.

Reinforced Cordura base

The floor is made of abrasion-resistant Cordura fabric. This nylon material is significantly more resistant than normal fabric and can withstand constant contact with rough surfaces - such as concrete on footbridges, wooden planks or stones on the beach. The reinforced base extends the life of the bag considerably. This reinforcement pays off, especially when the bag is frequently parked on uneven or sharp-edged surfaces.

For additional security, the bag can be closed with a small cable lock. Eyelets on the zip allow a lock to be pulled through. Although this does not protect against theft of the entire bag, it does prevent it from being opened unnoticed. A cable lock is not included in the scope of delivery and must be purchased separately.

Repairability has been planned

Ortlieb's claim to manufacture durable products also includes repairs. Even during development, attention is paid to repairability. With 18,000 repairs a year, the manufacturer describes itself as the world repair champion. The service is also constantly being expanded. This means that any damage can be repaired quickly and inexpensively and every bag should last for many decades.

The duffle is available in four sizes from 40 to 110 litres. The bag is available in the colours Sun Yellow, Olive and Black. The 40-litre version costs 175 euros, the 60-litre version 185 euros, the 85-litre version 195 euros and the 110-litre version 205 euros.
