The Slovenian manufacturer MvE Machining, based in Novo mesto, offers a gimbal-mounted drinks holder for sailing boats. The product is milled from solid aluminium and protected against corrosion by an anodised finish. Prices start at 55 euros.
The semi-gimbal system works by utilising gravity. The centre of gravity of the filled can lies below the pivot point of the drink holder. This ensures that the can always remains upright. The system is designed to function reliably at heeling angles of up to around 30 degrees. Its effectiveness depends on the fill level. A full can remains more stable than one that is half-full. The system only compensates for heeling; it does not compensate for pitching or rolling movements.
The assembly consists of several milled aluminium components. CNC machining ensures tight tolerances and smooth-running joints. The material, milled from solid aluminium, is anodised after machining to provide maximum protection against corrosion. The bearing and winch insert are made from seawater-resistant Delrin. This surface treatment protects against salt water and UV radiation. The mount is designed to accommodate standard cans with a diameter of 66 millimetres. A pattern of holes in the base allows condensation to drain away. Various designs are available.
The manufacturer offers two mounting options. The first option uses standard winches as mounting points and is suitable for temporary installation. The second option uses pipe clamps for pipe diameters of 22 millimetres and above. These fit onto many railings and supports on board. The universal joint must run parallel to the boat’s centreline in order to compensate for heel.
