Save space, keep clutter at bay, heat water efficiently: two handy folding aids make life on board more comfortable – and make the most of every inch.

Compact bin

This bin is a real all-rounder and is particularly useful on board. It hangs on a cupboard door, so it’s in exactly the right place for disposing of vegetable scraps or eggshells whilst cooking. The lid is designed to close airtight, and when the bin is nearly empty, the whole unit can be folded up to save space. A small storage compartment at the front holds a roll of fresh bin liners. Alternatively, it can be hung using two adhesive hooks. The dimensions are 25.2 by 23.9 centimetres; when folded, the bin is 6.2 centimetres deep, and 14.0 centimetres when unfolded. Price: 47 euros. Gas is expensive, so it makes sense to boil water using electricity, either in port or at sea if you have a powerful inverter. The additional kettle doesn’t have to take up much space either if, like the Adler model, it is foldable. When unfolded, it holds 0.6 litres. Folded up, the kettle is just 9.5 centimetres high; when in use, it measures 16.6 by 12.5 centimetres. It is powered by 230-volt shore power and requires up to 750 watts of power. As soon as the water boils or if no water is in the kettle, the heating element switches off automatically. The foldable silicone part is BPA-free and food-safe. Price: 26 euros.
