In the age of smartphones and tablets, handheld GPS devices have become rare. However, the new GPSMAP 86s and 86i models from Garmin are very interesting. They can be used both individually as mini chart plotters and in combination with a permanently installed Garmin plotter to expand the on-board system. They can also be used to control Garmin autopilots and selected Fusion audio devices.
The 86i model with integrated Inreach technology for emergency calls and short messages via the Iridium satellite network is particularly exciting. Thanks to worldwide coverage, it is possible to send and receive messages and share your location even from the most remote corners of the world. Those at home can also use the Livetrack function to track the current location of the device at any time. In an emergency, contact can also be made with the GEOS emergency call centre, which alerts the emergency services and informs stored emergency contacts and remains in contact with the user until the situation has been resolved.
An Iridium tariff is required to use the Inreach service. It can be booked directly via Garmin or other providers. Depending on the tariff, a weather forecast is also possible via the service. Further information about Inreach is available here.
The devices are also floatable and have a three-inch colour display. The GPSMAP 86s model is a GPS device without satellite communication and has a battery life of 40 to 200 hours. The 86i lasts up to 35 hours in tracking mode. Price: 399 euros or 599 euros for the version with Inreach.
