What every skipper should know about sawing, sanding and painting

Wood is used at some point on almost every boat, even on GRP boats - from the tiller to the rubbing strake, the bulkhead to the companionway and the interior fittings below deck. If you have the necessary expertise and are a bit of a handyman, you can easily work with this natural material yourself.

In addition to mahogany and teak, there have long been numerous other types of wood that are suitable for use on sailing boats. We reveal what you should look out for when choosing, which woods are predestined for which purpose and how their quality can be determined.

We also present the most important tools that should not be missing on board and show you how to use them.

Concrete practical tips and application examples illustrate, for example, how wooden mouldings are professionally joined, when screws, tenons and glue are used and, last but not least, how wooden surfaces can be treated and maintained.

The 19-page special contains the necessary basic knowledge about working with wood. Repair and handicraft work of all kinds will no longer be a problem. You can read about it in the new issue of YACHT (issue 5/05, available now from newsagents).
