Both products completely dispense with biocides and are therefore not antifoulings in the conventional sense. Instead, they rely on an innovative technology that makes it more difficult for fouling to adhere and at the same time makes subsequent cleaning easier. The centrepiece is the so-called Lubricator Fluid, a special component whose composition is not disclosed by the manufacturer. However, it is said to be non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
Safeguard SP is a self-polishing coating, while Protector HARD is based on a hard binder. Both variants are metal-free and can be applied to GRP, steel, wood and aluminium. They are suitable for both motor and sailing boats. Compared to biocide-free products from other manufacturers, they are very robust, so they can also be used to coat trailer boats or dry yachts.
A major advantage for owners who want to switch from conventional antifouling: In most cases, the new coatings can be applied directly to the existing, sanded old coating. Only thin-layer antifouling must be removed beforehand. A special barrier primer is not required.
Yachtcare's biocide-free underwater coatings are designed for use in waters with low to medium levels of fouling. However, they reach their limits in regions with heavy fouling or particularly aggressive organisms. Here, the manufacturer recommends checking the hull regularly and, if necessary, scheduling additional cleaning during the season.
According to the manufacturer, cleaning itself should be easy. Yachtcare recommends removing any fouling immediately after removing the crane and while still wet. Cleaning with moderate high pressure is possible and sufficient in most cases.
The new coatings offer a flexible solution for owners who frequently travel in waters with different fouling conditions. They can easily switch between different regions without having to worry about local regulations regarding certain biocides.
The paints are available in the colours white, black, blue and red. The container sizes of 750 millilitres and 2.5 litres cover the requirements for both minor touch-up work and complete repainting. With a yield of around 11 m² per litre, the paints are comparatively economical to use.
When applying, ensure that the substrate is clean, dry and has good adhesion. Sanding the old coat is always recommended to ensure optimum adhesion. Additional primers or adhesion promoters are not necessary.
An important aspect: With a recommended retail price of €44.90 for 750 millilitres or €119.00 for 2.5 litres for SAFEGUARD SP and €49.90 / €134.00 for Protector HARD, the biocide-free anti-fouling protection is priced within the range of comparable conventional antifouling products. In view of the environmental benefits and the potentially longer shelf life - as no active ingredients are washed out - they may even prove to be more cost-effective in the long term.
