The construction by Italian Lorenzo Argento is almost 22 metres long, six metres wide and weighs 44 tonnes. On board: scientific equipment costing 1.6 million euros and small laboratories. The sailing scientists can use the equipment to lift and analyse seawater and plankton from depths of up to 3,000 metres.
The project was initiated by Prof Gerald Haug, a sailor and Director of the Max Planck Institute in Mainz, among others. He is convinced that sailing research vessels made of GRP would be better suited to certain tasks than motorised ones made of metal, which contaminate their own research area. The project is being financed by the Werner Siemens Foundation in Switzerland, with the Max Planck Society providing the instrumentation.
