Hallberg-Rassy is now adding a counterpart with an aft cockpit to the current 40C with centre cockpit. The new 400 will be ready in the summer

It has become apparent: For several days now, the Swedes from Hallberg-Rassy have been publishing information and picture snippets about a new ship on Facebook in salami tactics. Anyone who has taken a closer look and combined the information has quickly realised: It must be the replacement for the long-serving and often sold 412 with aft cockpit from 2012. Now shipyard boss Magnus Rassy has let the cat out of the bag: There will be a new Hallberg-Rassy 400. The ship with aft cockpit will be presented as a world premiere at the "Open Yard" in-house exhibition in Ellös in August 2021.

Because you don't have to invent good things twice, the Swedes are building the new boat in the fast hull of the centre-cockpit yacht Hallberg-Rassy, 40C, which was presented last year as a much-noticed innovation. The deck has been redesigned with an open aft cockpit, two helm stations and, of course, the unavoidable windscreen, which is part of HR's general concept with no alternative. The stern with the integrated bathing platform and the comparatively high three-saloon rig also remain unchanged. You can read the comprehensive test of the Hallberg-Rassy 40C in YACHT, issue 3/2020 or at Direct download at YACHT online.

Of course, the design as a ship with an aft cockpit fundamentally changes the expansion options. The companionway, the primary design element for the interior, is positioned much further aft in the new Hallberg-Rassy due to the design. This means that there is more space available in the central area for the saloon, galley and navigation than on the yacht with a centre cockpit, and the main bulkhead is also to be positioned further aft. This allows the shipyard to offer the owner's cabin in the foredeck with its own bathroom and separate shower in versions with a central island bed or triangular berth.

Instead of the large master cabin in the stern of the 40C, the new Hallberg-Rassy 400 is equipped with two double cabins, as is usual for yachts with an aft cockpit. For owners who are usually travelling alone or with a small crew, an optional walk-in locker can be installed on the starboard side instead of the aft cabin. In this case, the second wet room at the rear would be larger and could also offer a separate shower cubicle. The layouts with all possible variants can be viewed in the following photo gallery.

The prices for the Hallberg-Rassy 400 and its centre-cockpit counterpart, the 40C, are the same. The shipyard is currently asking for a base price of 4,241,800 Swedish kronor, which is 418,400 euros at the current exchange rate. Including 19 per cent VAT, the purchase price amounts to around 498,000 euros, including the sails and with the usual high-quality equipment.
