The centrepiece is the large cockpit: it is wider and larger than usual and has a permanently installed table, which is made possible by the sideways offset companionway. The background to this is the realisation that this area forms the central living space in warm waters. A 2.60 metre long aluminium rib (manufactured by Highfield) is stowed lengthways under the cockpit in a large garage. There are no aft cabins, which, according to the initiators, cannot be ventilated well enough anyway. Guests therefore sleep in a bunk bed cabin in the centre of the ship. The owner's cabin is located in the bow and is particularly spacious, with a bunk measuring 2.00 by 1.00 metres. There are further sleeping options in the saloon, where the dinette can be converted into a 1.40 metre wide berth.
The elimination of the aft cabins allows for a spacious engine room for units such as a watermaker and air conditioning as well as two 40 hp Yanmar engines. These are designed to make the bow thruster and generator superfluous. Overall, the Outstar 48 is designed to meet the needs of a small crew. Among other things, even the furlers are hydraulic. An equipment carrier in the stern of the boat serves as a bimini for the helmsman, accommodates solar panels and serves as an attachment point for the mainsheet.
The boat is a design by the Italian Lorenzo Argento who worked for Wally and now works for Michael Schmidt Yachtbau, among others. The Outstar is being built at Algro Yachting in Gdansk made of carbon-foam-epoxy sandwich, vacuum-compressed and tempered. The design, a sail carrying capacity of 5.12 and the lines indicate a very agile ship.
The initiator and driving force behind the project is IT businessman and blue water sailor Dr Ralf Hinkel, who is building a small series on Freddie Böhnert's XP-50 "Lunatix" based on his experience after extensive sailing trips around the world. Andreas Bock, formerly in leading positions at Hanseyachts and Michael Schmidt Yachtbau, is also on board. The Outstar 48 will be launched in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival succeed. The price is estimated at 1.5 million euros including the carbon mast. The website of the project: www.outstar48.com
