Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel has largely completed a 56-footer that mixes the design features of an Open 60 with those of a cruising boat

The FC 56 was commissioned by a customer and is a more modern performance cruiser with Open 60 genes that can go into small series production and is based on the FC 53 from the same shipyard. The 17.10 metre long and 5.24 metre wide boat weighs just 11.9 tonnes. The construction by the French team Finot/Conq is made of triple-tempered carbon-foam sandwich. The swing keel made of carbon fin and lead bulb extends to a depth of 4.00 metres when lowered, which, in combination with the generous beam, makes the large sail area possible on the one hand and opens up shallower areas and harbours on the other. The fathead mainsail is set on a carbon rig without a backstay.

Conceptually, the boat is a cruisable and slightly smaller Imoca, one of the boats used in the Vendée Globe regatta.

It is designed to be just as smooth and single-handed and is equipped for long journeys. Two sections in the foredeck and the stern area are watertight and separated from the rest of the boat. The customisable interior made of lightweight composite material is kept light on construction number 1; various veneers are currently also available. Sail load, crew cabin and dinghy garage are also possible. The FC 56 is sold by Arno Kronenberg from RBK-Yachting in Munich. www.fc56.de
