The coasts of Kvarner are among the highlights of the Adriatic. Nevertheless, fewer crews sail here due to the stronger bora. Tips on how to deal with the strong winds and enjoy a great trip

The islands deeper in the Kvarner Gulf, south of Istria, give many sailors a queasy feeling. For topographical reasons, the strongest bora wind on the Croatian coast blows there, as the mountains form a gust here. As the wind can blow even in the most beautiful summer months and then reach gale force, many sailors tend to pass the islands of Krk, Rab and their smaller neighbours at high speed. However, with their beautiful bays and small villages, they are a worthwhile destination and not as crowded as other parts of the islands further off the coast.

We give tips on how to approach the trip, how best to keep an eye on the weather and where to hide if it does blow. The Croatian weather service predicts the bora very early - if you follow the weather forecast, you can't really be surprised.
