The parts list for a 38-foot cruising yacht comprises 2,800 components. These components again consist of a large number of individual parts. The sheer mass alone means that failure at any point is not only possible, but probable. Natural wear and tear, defectiveness, user error - there are various reasons for failure. And this can cause subsequent problems. A broken pawl will disable the entire winch, a burst seam the entire sail, a simple part such as a defective impeller the engine. These are all problems that can be fixed, but can cost time and nerves on holiday and become safety-relevant.
A timely check before departure prevents stress later on. The owner is well advised to check and maintain all parts and functions of the boat, from the Windex to the bilge pump, from the anchor windlass to the stern light, and to repair them in the event of damage. A large overview in YACHT, issue 13/2022, shows which points you should think about.
