Although some things often don't run as smoothly as they did in younger years, there is no doubt that older people have probably never been as fit, as well-off, as full of life and as adventurous as they are today. This can also be seen in sailing - the marketing term "Best Ager" could have been invented for sailors. This is because, as a rule, the worst is over in terms of work and family, and there is finally plenty of time and opportunities to enjoy the water. What's more, most yachts and boats today are comfortable enough for senior citizens - or can be converted to do so with little effort.
A six-strong YACHT team looked around and asked around among sailing oldies and compiled their findings into a large report. First of all, it provides many good examples of how the best years can be even better - and even more numerous.
Still sailing long distance in old age - why not? Or learning to sail at the age of 62 - of course! We introduce you to people who have done just that. Or live out their passion for classic wooden yachts, or build a boat for a trip to the Amazon at the age of 69. They continue to meet up with their old mates, but now for a skippered charter trip, they modify their boat to suit their age and set off on another extreme trip. There are many examples like this: Older age, and the restrictions that usually come with it, does not necessarily mean that sailing is over. Quite the opposite: there are usually suitable opportunities - you just have to recognise them.
