Oilskins: North Sails brings functional clothing

The sailmaker, which is part of the North Technology Group (including Hall and Southern Spars, Magic Marine), is clearly aiming for technological leadership right from the start of the new line. The unique selling points of the product series: The waterproof and multi-layered TightWeave outer material consists of tightly woven and thin fibres and is light overall (and is an analogy to North's 3di sails). Durable four-layer laminates (4DL) serve as abrasion protection and maintain breathability over the entire surface, a weak point of previous constructions that leaked at the patches, according to North. A layer of the permanently waterproof, windproof and highly breathable Gore-Tex Pro membrane is used between an inner protective layer and the outer material. The tops are finished with 1.2 millimetre thin and very stretchy neoprene cuffs, which are protected on the outside with nylon. The top range is called Ocean and has already been tested in the Vendée Globe. The Southern Ocean Smock is characterised by a high collar and, like the zipperless Atlantic Smock, has a large waterproof pocket and an extra-long back.

The Ocean trousers are equipped with removable knee pads and a double zip. The Ocean range is cut oversize so that first and mid layers can be worn well under the clothing. Available in sulphur (photo) or red. The prices are upmarket: Southern Ocean Smock 1000 Euro , Atlantic Smock and Ocean trousers 800 Euro .

Offshore line for the broad market

North calls its more conventional line Offshore, but it is also designed to be completely waterproof and particularly breathable. The features: TightWeave, Gore-Tex Pro, 4DL reinforcements, two-way zip. The collar is also quite high and the pockets are large. The cut allows for a normal mid-layer. The offshore trousers with the same material features come with elasticated, Velcro-adjustable braces, the ends of which can be stowed away, an equally simple cut designed to reduce snagging, as well as large pockets with ventilation and reinforcements on the seat and knees.
