The good news first: if you don't want to freeze on board in spring, you don't necessarily need thick clothes. It's the combination that makes the difference, and the tried and tested onion principle applies all the more here. Functional underwear as the first layer keeps you warm and also absorbs perspiration. Here are five base layers for winter camps and spring cruises:
Gill Hydrophobe
The 100 per cent polypropylene material is designed to actively repel water and prevent the fabric from becoming saturated, ensuring that the skin feels dry at all times. Top and Trousers are close-fitting, but should offer plenty of freedom of movement thanks to their enormous elasticity. The neckband also serves to keep water out. The garments in the Gill Hydrophobe Series are also equipped with a sun protection factor of UV-50+ and can also be worn individually in mild conditions.
Decathlon Tribord
The combination of different materials is designed to provide pleasant warmth and transport moisture away from the skin. The seamless finish ensures a high level of comfort and the stretchy material provides an ergonomic fit. According to the manufacturer Decathlon, the polypropylene fibres of the Tribord functional shirts and the Trousers odour-inhibiting.
Helly Hansen Lifa Merino
The two-layer combination of merino wool and Lifa Stay-Warm merino fabric (57% wool, 43% polypropylene) is designed to fit the body particularly softly. Extra-flat seams prevent pressure points on the skin and should ensure individual freedom of movement. Thanks to the snug fit of Shirt and Trousers The functional underwear Lifa Merino Midweight Crew is not bulky.
Musto Peformance Thermal
The performance thermal fabric is designed to transport moisture away from the skin to the outside, making it particularly suitable for cruising sailors. It keeps you warm even at low temperatures. The Performance Thermal material is lightweight, designed to mould to the body and offer freedom of movement. The fibres are treated with silver ions to reduce odours. Musto also produces the Active Thermal a base layer for regatta sailors and the thinner Quickdry a layer for moderate temperatures with sun protection factor 40.
Ortovox Rock n Wool
The Rock-n-Wool series from Ortovox is made from 100 per cent merino wool and yet is not itchy. It has flat seams and is moisture and temperature regulating. The shirt has a round neckline with neck tape and a print on the shoulder. The trousers features an elasticated waistband with woven-in brand name, durable patches on the knees and tight leg cuffs.
Schöffel Merino
Warms in winter and cools in summer: merino. Thanks to its odour-neutral properties, it is also suitable for trips lasting several days. The outer fabric of the Schöffel Merino Shirts consists of 43% lyocell, 34% wool and 23% nylon and is therefore very comfortable to wear.
