Casual Breton: the striped shirt
Nothing against functional clothing - but sailing and savoir vivre somehow belong together. Here are the classics

Functional clothing is great and practical, but sometimes it can also be a little more classic on board. Some pieces never go out of fashion; they have stood the test of time for decades, if not centuries, due to their look and functionality. Here are the fashion evergreens that no wardrobe should be without:

The Marinière

Breton fishermen wore them, Coco Chanel made them famous, and even today striped shirts are the epitome of maritime fashion.

One of the most traditional manufacturers is Bonneterie D'Armor from Quimper, which sells its shirts under the brand name Armor Lux. They are available in many different cuts, colours and cotton qualities. One of the classics for men is the long-sleeved Héritage* for ladies also the one with Three-quarter sleeve*. Around 50 euros.

The Troyer

A real sea dog needs a troyer. Wool keeps you warm, regulates moisture and not only proves its worth during the dog watch. Knitted troyers are available in many different colours and qualities, made from pure new wool or fine merino, which is particularly suitable for people who are sensitive to scratches.

The sailing shoe

The story of Paul Sperry and his Topdsiders is too good not to tell: The inventor of the world's first boat shoe, as we know it today as a classic from other manufacturers such as Timberland* was inspired by his dog, of all things.

Imitating the natural grip of dogs' paws, Sperry cut grooves into the rubber soles of the boat shoes in 1935. This is how the famous and still available Topsider*. Depending on size and colour, the Topsider is available from as little as 52 euros, while the men's classic from Timberland* from 78 euros.

The sailing boot

Dubarry's sailing boots from Ireland are not only functional, but also stylish. While the Shamrock scores with Gore-Tex and leather, the Ultima is made entirely of leather on the outside but has a Gore-Tex lining. It is also available in Extra Fit for stronger calves. Both models are waterproof and breathable, classics too. From 299 euros >> available here .

The South Westerner

Amongst all the high-tech hoods, caps and beanies, it now only leads a shadowy existence: the good old Südwester. This is actually unfair, because hardly any other headwear is as flexible and functional as it. Waterproof and with a wide brim, it prevents water from running down your neck in a downpour and also gives you the best all-round view at all times. The signal yellow model from AWHA* is available for 19.99 euros.
