As much a part of summer as sun cream: a cap protects the sensitive head against excessive sunlight. Especially bald people or those who are on their way there appreciate protective headgear on board. For women, the cap also ensures that the hair stays where it is even on windy days and doesn't constantly fall into the face. The question remains: cap or hat? Both variants have their advantages and disadvantages.
The reliable ones: Hats
Admittedly: A hat looks less casual than the old washed-out New York Yankees cap or a technical sailing cap with a sporty look. But its advantage is that the wide brim not only protects the head and eyes, but also the sensitive neck from sunlight.
The model from Gill has a removable chin strap, is slightly water-repellent and offers UV protection of 50+. It is adjustable and has an internal headband, the stiffened brim is non-absorbent. Available in various colours and sizes, from 39.90 euros.
The hat from Musto is made of quick-drying and antibacterial fabric, has a sun protection rating of 40+ and an adjustable chin strap. The brim can be folded up and has buttons. This means that the sides can be folded up and fixed in place if required, which with a little imagination can even create a bold cowboy look. Available in various colours and sizes, size M from 37 euros.
The cool ones: Caps
They simply look sportier, but harbour two dangers: Firstly, caps do not protect the back of the neck from sunburn, so you need to make sure you apply plenty of sun cream. And: If they are not attached to the shirt, they can go overboard in the gust. Depending on the model, you may need a retaining clip.
This buttonless model from Gill is made from 100 per cent brushed cotton: The unisex cap The width can be individually adjusted and the rear width adjuster is made of non-rusting material, which is an advantage on board. Available in various colours, from 27.99 euros.

The Gill Race Cap It also comes with an integrated retaining clip, UV protection of 50+ and is designed to reduce UV radiation and reflections from the water particularly well thanks to the dark-coloured underside of the visor.
