The jury of the Restoration Award did not have an easy time of it during the 33rd German Classics in Laboe this year. With "Oromocto" ( YACHT 17/2020 ) and "Troll", two sea-going yachts whose owners have lovingly cared for them for decades were competing for the prize.
The "Oromocto" was commissioned from De Dood by the grandfather of the current owner in 1971 and sailed for many years as a regatta boat and still today as a family boat.
Launched in 1924 as construction number 600 at the Reichswerft shipyard in Kiel, the pointed rig "Troll" was originally called "Sturmvogel" and was at home on the Elbe under the HSC banner.
Since 1995, the ten-metre sea cruiser, adventurously rescued during the war and renamed "Troll" in 1942, has been a member of the Lehmann family, whose children grew their sea legs on board on voyages as far as Sweden.
In the winter of 2004, the ravages of time made it necessary to take a closer look at some of the pre-war boat's problem areas. What followed was an unplanned 14-year restoration, which owner Dirk Lehmann, supported by master boat builder Nils Engel (portrait in YACHT classic 2/2022 ) was carried out by the company itself.
Lehmann had to work on almost all areas of his classic, but was largely able to preserve the original substance. The Friends of Classic Yachts has now honoured this preservation of its historic yacht.
Every year, the Freundeskreis Klassische Yachten honours a completed restoration project with the coveted copper kettle. The award criteria are the yacht-historical significance of the boat, the scope of the work, the fidelity to the original and the quality of the workmanship, as well as the owner's own contribution.
