Classic Yacht Symposium 2023
Classic yacht enthusiasts will meet in Hamburg on Saturday, 10 February 2024, for specialist lectures and a rich entertainment programme on the subject of traditional yachts. A symposium will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., focussing on construction and restoration, while the evening event from 7 p.m. will offer reports, outlooks and cultural events

The organising crew of the Freundeskreis Klassische Yachten promises a colourful bouquet full of adventurous, interesting and cultural contributions to the guests who will be admitted to the Miralles Saal of the Hamburg Youth Music School at Mittelweg 42 from 6 pm. There will be plenty of room for a chat as well as a culinary and music programme. Interested guests are also welcome, admission is free and registration is not required.

High-calibre expert speakers

Although the symposium during the day, which will feature high-calibre speakers, can only be attended after registration and for an entrance fee, it will be broadcast virtually and is therefore also open to all interested parties.

The topics covered are yacht construction, clinker construction and restoration in Denmark: "Why are our classic yachts the way they are, how did they develop and how do they behave? A field of tension between formula, technical knowledge and craftsmanship experience, aesthetic issues and utilisation requirements."

The evening programme will include a report on the participation of the "Germania VI" in the stormy Fastnet Race last summer. In addition, a founding member will look back on 30 years of the Freundeskreis Klassische Yachten.

In their joint lecture, designer Juliane Hempel and yacht historian John Lammerts van Bueren explain the tension between formulas, technical knowledge and craftsmanship, aesthetic issues and the requirements of using classic yachts. Hempel has been involved in the construction and optimisation of classic and modern yachts for many years. John Lammerts van Bueren is co-chairman of the Yacht Symposium Helsinki, former president and current head of the technical committee of the International Eight Metre Association, himself a multiple world champion and crew member on classic yachts such as "Atlantic" and "Cambria".

Prospects for the summer

The presentation of the programme for next summer's Classic Week provides a preview of the coming season. The organisers are presenting a varied programme on the water and on land. After the feeder night regatta The Run, the fleet will sail through sheltered waters from Apenrade to Dyvig, from Dyvig to Hørup Hav and from there across the fjord to Kappeln and Kiel, where the Rendezvous of the Classics will conclude with a big closing party in the time-honoured Kiel Yacht Club.

The programme is framed by picture and film presentations, Irish folk music and prize awards: a long-distance prize for a folk boat trip to Norway and an honorary prize for special services to the archipelago cruisers.
