This year, the participating crews had very different experiences at the start of the 55 nautical mile long-distance race to the north. While the starters from Flensburg and off Schleimünde had to battle against unpleasant seas in a strong easterly wind on a challenging starting cross before finally heading north with sheets hoisted after dark, the fleets from Kiel and Fehmarn were on course from the start with a rough ride and corresponding motivation. Impressions from Doro Ahlers.
In Kiel, the picture was completely different - with just enough wind for the big ones and summer sunshine, the Kiel Fjord became the stage for the classics. Just like at the 1936 Olympics, the start took place in front of the old KYC start house. It was a marvellous sight, also for the visitors on land, to see so many classic boats on the inner fjord, which formed an impressive contrast to the commercial shipping and maritime hustle and bustle. Bettina Poulain from Freundeskreis Klassische Yachten captured the most beautiful impressions.
