News from the trade fair in Cannes: Lagoon fires up the important 14-metre class with a new cruising cat of the latest generation - with flybridge and front cockpit

Lagoon Catamarans in Bordeaux has the full programme. The world's largest catamaran manufacturer recently launched two new models onto the market, the Lagoon 40 as a complete redesign of the 39er (test in YACHT 7/2018) and the completely newly developed Lagoon 50 (test in YACHT 3/2018). Both new boats were presented as world premieres at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf in January.

The shipyard is now seeking a middle way with a new Lagoon 46, which was unveiled at the current trade fair in Cannes. The new 14-metre vessel differs only slightly in appearance from the larger 50-metre vessel. The general appearance and the layout on deck are comparable on both ships. The only difference is that the 46 is just under a metre shorter and around 15 centimetres less wide than its bigger brother. The new ship also adopts the flybridge concept with a central helm station and the innovative lounge area behind it. The upper deck is accessed via two staircases, one directly from the aft cockpit and the other via the running deck. A second lounge and relaxation area is provided on the foredeck in the form of a front cockpit. There is also a central bar.

Of course, the rig concept also corresponds to the latest generation in the Lagoon model series. As with all new boats, the mast of the 46 is more or less in the centre of the boat. This should reduce pitching and rolling in the waves and make handling easier. In addition, with the rig positioned far aft, a self-tacking jib of a reasonable size is still feasible. This is also the shipyard standard.

The interior design concept of the new Lagoon 46 follows a rather conservative line, in contrast to the extremely versatile Lagoon 50, which can be configured in a variety of ways with up to six cabins and six bathrooms. The new and smaller ship offers the usual and class-compliant layout options with three (for owners) or four cabins (for charter), each with its own bathroom. The dark walnut interior has been announced as standard. Optionally, the interior can also be ordered in light-coloured oak, which used to be the basic version for Lagoon.

The Lagoon 46 will be presented as a world first at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf in January. The shipyard has not yet announced the prices and detailed specifications.

Also in Cannes, the Beneteau Group, to which Lagoon Catamarans belongs, has now announced a brand new catamaran line under the name "Excess". No details have yet been announced - only that it is a "young and spirited brand" that is intended to embody a "new vision of sailing". So there is still plenty of excitement on the market.
