Tiny, largely uninhabited and off the beaten track - the Jumentos Chain, located in the far south-east of the Bahamas, is the perfect place to fall into oblivion. However, in addition to secluded sandy beaches, the beautiful island chain is also home to fascinating marine phenomena: the Blue Holes.
These deep sinkholes created by erosion are outstanding snorkelling and diving spots as they provide a habitat for countless fish of all sizes and colours. Seen from the air, the dark blue holes look like a gateway to another world.
Caribbean flair in all shades of turquoise on the leeward west coasts and rugged windward coasts facing the Atlantic with sharp-edged coral rock. The Jumentos Islands, which stretch in a semi-circle from Long Island to Little Ragged over a distance of around 100 nautical miles, present an antagonistic beauty.
Wiebke and Ralf Gerking have been on a long voyage with the HR 43 "Flora" for three years. They travelled from Greece to the Caribbean via the Canary Islands. Here they share with us a dreamlike and challenging trip along the Jumentos Islands, which thrilled us with blue-hole hopping, curious reef sharks and unaccentuated shallow water passages.
