Barnacles and calcareous tubeworms are becoming a real nuisance for boat owners this summer. Why this is the case and what you can do about them

Many a premature crane appointment has already been necessary this season because barnacles populated the underwater hull or reduced propulsion in thick layers on the propeller. Owners have been suffering from this problem for some time, especially in brackish water areas such as the Schlei or the Trave.

This summer, however, with unusually warm water, it is also occurring elsewhere. The calcareous tubeworm is also spreading in more and more areas, particularly in the North Sea. The invasive species grows to a considerable length within a short space of time and can quickly clog up ship culverts - which can even pose a safety risk.

Good antifouling and frequent sailing can counteract this. We spoke to owners and experts about the causes and remedies.

The article on the fouling problem can now be read in the new YACHT (issue 17/2021; available now in magazine shops and as a digital edition in the YACHT app) or can be ordered directly here).
