One of the best endings to a day's sailing is probably when the anchor drops in a sheltered bay. No direct neighbours on the jetty, the hustle and bustle on land is far away. The downside, however, is that the land is also far away - the dinghy has to be made ready for an exploration, a walk with the dog or a trip to the bakery. And that means inflating it. However, the small dinghy is also quickly filled to capacity with a hand-held device, but when it comes to SUP at the latest, it becomes exhausting.
There are often rather large boards on board, which have a lot of volume and also need more pressure than inflatable boats. This makes it very strenuous, especially at the end, just before a bar is reached. Electric pumps are then a practical aid.
There is a system-related problem: a pump alone cannot usually achieve a large volume at high pressure. A blower can move a lot of air per minute, but cannot manage the pressure. The opposite is true for a compressor with a piston pump. Although it can fill the SUP with the necessary pressure, this usually takes quite a long time. Some manufacturers therefore offer devices that combine both systems.
We tested nine models. These included battery-powered devices and those with a 12-volt connection. You can read about what you need to consider when choosing and which pump performs best on board in YACHT 9/2022. DK-Shop or you can download the test directly via the link below.
